In this video I figure out how to mount a GFS NYII surface-mount pickup at the bridge position in my Epiphone Casino and do a back-and-forth tone shootout comparing it against the stock Epiphone dogear P90. These Far East-produced Epiphone Casinos are generally derided for the muffled, dull, wooly tone of the overwound factory dogear P90 pickups. The GFS NY2 is an affordable ($40) Korean-made, hand-wound single-coil pickup that uses mini-P90-style construction within a vintage Rickenbacker- or DeArmond/Gretsch Dynasonic-style case. The top-end that was completely missing and boxed-in opens up, and I'm getting more of the crisp Rickenbacker-/Gretsch-/Dynasonic-style single coil chime and jangle that I needed for my style of playing, which is generally 1960s-influenced with a clean-ish amp tone. The neck pickup is not only still very very wooly, but it is also now unusably out-of-balance both volume- and tone-wise with the bridge pickup.
