I finally got thinking: "Could it be something about the pickups"? So I decided to look for any close-up image of John's Casino pickups, and I found it in the new GET BACK movie film by Peter Jackson. As you can see the magnetic pole pieces of the pickups are set extended over the pickup surface, which is unusual. On standard humbuckers with adjustable pole pieces, they should not be extended more than 2- 2,5 mm from the pickup surface. The Epiphone Casino is equipped with P90 pickups which are not adjustable in height. The only way to achieve a more present and fatter sound is to raise the pickup pole pieces closer to the strings by unscrewing them (about 2,5 / 3 mm over the pickup top surface). This will allow the string to transmit more voltage to the pickups and get that "gritty" tone John's has, on the Let it be record and on the rooftop concert.I' have found it curious that the Beatles had such a knowledge of the electric pickup functions back in 1968 (maybe even before? Does anyone have any hi resolutions image of the '65 / '68 period?). So here is secret about John's tone UNVEILED for you, a tone that you can reproduce on your Epiphone casino right away by simply raising the poles about 2,5 / maximum 3mm over the pickup top surface and enjoy the exact tone he has on his Fender Twin amp on the Rooftop concert!
