When we explored NVMe for our PowerEdge R630 series, we shared that there are only three options: PCIe, M.2, and U.2. The R730 only supports two of those options which are PCIe and M.2. It is important to note that when using a PCIe NVMe drive, you must have Dell firmware. Even if you have a card with Dell firmware, it is still very limited. You cannot install an OS on it and cannot use it in a RAID configuration. It can really only be used for extra storage. The R730 does not have a M.2 connection on the motherboard, so you must purchase a separate PCIe to M.2 adapter that plugs into a PCIe slot. In this video we are using a Supermicro card with two M.2 NVMe drives. It is important to note that Dell 14th Generation Boss cards are not backwards compatible and will not work with the R730.
